Lionel Richie turned a pause between songs at his Phoenix concert into a pointed joke about Usher and Chris Brown, whose co-headlining stadium tour has become one of R&B’s major live events of 2026.
Speaking from the stage at Mortgage Matchup Center on Aug. 11, Richie compared the duo’s The R&B Tour with his own generation of performers, invoking his years with the Commodores and his current touring partners, Earth, Wind & Fire. He then supplied the punch line: “We didn’t go to jail.”
The 77-year-old singer laughed, quickly apologized and called himself and his peers “fine Christian men.” His delivery made the remark sound more like a roast than the beginning of a serious feud, but the reference carried an obvious extra edge given Brown’s well-documented legal history and his current criminal case in London.
Brown answered in the comments with laughing emojis and an age joke of his own, calling Richie “paw paw,” while fellow R&B singer Tank publicly defended Brown and Usher. Usher had not publicly responded to Richie’s remarks.

Richie made the remark during the Phoenix stop of his Sing a Song All Night Long Tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. “And Usher and Chris Brown,” Richie began in the fan-recorded clip. “See, they try to do something new.” He then compared the younger stars’ joint tour with artists from his own era.
“The Commodores with Earth, Wind & Fire, we were doing that back 40 years ago,” Richie said before pausing for the punch line. “Only difference is, between then and now, we didn’t go to jail.” Richie immediately laughed, apologized and added, “We’re fine Christian men.”
He continued joking about the difference between generations, noting that performers during his prime did not have Instagram or TikTok documenting their behavior.

According to The Shade Room, Brown appeared in the comments beneath the viral video with four laughing emojis before writing, “Damn unk. We love ya paw paw.” The wording turned Richie’s generational jab back on the veteran singer without directly challenging the substance of the joke. Usher, meanwhile, had not publicly weighed in on the exchange.
Tank took a more serious approach. “As an elder in this game i support, encourage, and uplift the next generation,” Tank wrote on X, adding that he tries to be there through other artists’ “ups and their downs.” He then singled out Brown and Usher, saying they were “doing something that has NEVER been done before.”
Usher and Brown Are in the Middle of a 33-Date Stadium Tour
Brown and Usher launched The R&B Tour at Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High on June 26. Live Nation announced the project as a 33-date co-headlining stadium tour stretching across North America. Stops include Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and other major markets before the scheduled Dec. 11 finale at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
