Just use a No Foreign Transaction fee credit card. This won't be the best option if the vendor or business doesn't accept card so in that case, yes, use Pesos! I've been to Cabo a few times and I can tell you that I rarely needed to use cash. I used the DiDi app for rides (Mexico's UBER) so my card was automatically charged for tips. I will carry some pesos with me for taking the bus, small shops or vendors, tipping, etc. but not much. I will stay about 4 days at a time so $80 or ($1380 in pesos) is all i really need and if i have a lot left towards the end of my trip, Ill spend it or save it for next time.

Do you have a video regarding tipping in Mexico? Ultimately one that gives you the peso amount. Most other tipping in Mexico videos give a USD amount for their tipping

When I use a random ATM in Mexico, I got scammed for a few thousand dollars extra that they took out. So yes, that part is very true.

what is the point of a voluntary conversion fee at the ATM's? Why would you knowingly accept?

Question, I haven't been to Mexico since 2013 to visit family. Ik once on the plane you have to declare the amount you have. I have way less than than the maximum being 10k USD or it's equivalent. I have my money before via my bank before going, now my question is when I go through Mexican customs, do I need to worry at the airport about customs shaking me down for money?

I am visiting Mexico next month so from your video it sounds like I should only bring cash for tipping, but I can use my debit card for everything else. What I didn’t quite understand was it sounds like I have to choose whether or not my card is gonna convert to USD. Could you explain that a little bit more when I’m using my debit card?

Regarding ATMs: I second her thought about using only a bank's ATM. I was in Portugal and I tried to withdrawal cash from a random stand-alone ATM on the street. After I put in my PIN, it ejected my card and told me it was out of service. When I received my bank statement the following month, I found that a whole bunch of small withdrawals had been made using my card somewhere in the Middle East. Thankfully, I was able to prove that I was nowhere near the Middle East on the withdrawal dates, and I got my money back.

They now have 20 peso coins and they closely resemble the 10 peso ones so you have to make sure you check them.

The coins called pesos too? Are they considered a smaller denomination than the bills? I am confused because I got some popcorn in. It said it was 89 pesos and so I gave a one dollar coin and the lady looked at me funny and then I just gave her a bill that said 100 pesos and then she gave me some change back.

What do you recommend tipping? I’m American, so usually at a restaurant it’s 15-20% the bill, is this expected in Mexico?

You cannot pay in dollars in 99% of Mexico. But 99% of people who visit Mexico from the US or Canada tend to visit the 1% of Mexico that does. That's an important distinction.

So, we go to Mexico pretty often. What i do is take a bunch of USDs and exchange at casa de cambios. Look around and use the one that is going to give you the most favorable rate.

When shopping or dining out, ask what they pay the USD. If their rate is better than what you got at the casa de cambio, pay in dollars. Otherwise pay on pesos.

I avoid using ATMs and CCs. Only as a last resort.
